Teeth-whitening is big business. Although statistics vary
depending on which organization you check, it is
Americans spend an estimated  $600 million per year on
teeth-whitening products, according to the American
Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. The U.S.
Federal Trade
Commission reports that in 2007, each dentist who
belonged to this Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
performed 70 teeth-whitening procedures, and made
$25,000 for those procedures --- which totalled $138
million a year from this one industry group alone. In
addition to whitening procedures performed in the dentist
office, Americans can now whiten their teeth at
non-dentist cosmetic stalls in shopping malls or
stand-alone shops or buy any number of at-home teeth
whitening products.

Procter and Gamble was the first, with its Crest White
Strips. They are now available in 14-day treatments or
7-day treatments.

But before there was Crest or any Rembrandt or any of the
other products on the shelf, people used home made
remedies to naturally whiten their teeth. Here are the best
natural home made remedies to whiten your teeth:

1.
Baking Soda. Bicarbonate of soda has been used as a
toothpaste for over 100 years. The fine particles act as a
mild abrasive, scraping away stains caused by coffee or
tea or foods with dark dyes such as blueberries.  Just make
a paste with a little water and brush gently, starting with
the often neglected molars and back teeth and working
your way to the front. Finish with a rinse of warm water.

2.
Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can be used as
a mouth wash. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleach which
gently whitens your teeth over time. In fact, hydrogen
peroxide is also the bleach used by dentists to whiten teeth
in the dentist office. The difference is that the dentist uses
a much higher concentration of the cleach (between 20 to
25%), while the concentration available over-the-counter
is usually 10% or less.

2.
Pineapples. The fiber acts as a natural abrasive.

3.
Strawberries. The fiber acts as a natural abrasive.
Strawberries also contain Xylitol, a natural compound that
protects the teeth and gums against plaque. Soldiers chew
gum containing Xylitol to protect their teeth. Certain trees
in Africa also have bark which contains Xylitol, and this
is believed to be the reason that people who over many
thousands of years have eaten the bark of these trees to
whiten their teeth. In India, many people eat the twigs of
the Neem tree also to whiten teeth.

4.
Eucalyptus sticks. These whiten teeth and sooth the
gums.
