Dry, painful cracked skin on the bottom of your feet is not
just a cosmetic annoyance. It can also be a threat to your
health. Dry, cracked skin allows fungus and bacteria to
more easily enter the feet.  If you're diabetic or if, like
millions if Americans, you suffer from impaired insulin
response, you may not even notice that you have an
infection until after gangrene has set in.

What can you do to safely treat cracked feet at home? Is
there a natural routine that works for painful cracked feet?

Here at chootoo we have gathered tips sent in from our
readers (thank you!) to come up with this wonderful natural
routine you can use at home for cracked feet.

1. Disinfect. First address the cracks that are red and
painful by applying witch hazel. It will sterilize and soothe
the skin. You can also apply Neosporin or another
antibacterial ointment until the cracks are no longer
bleeding or red.

2. Warm Soak. Then, once the red disappears, you should
soak your feet in warm, never hot, water for 40 minutes.
This will soften the skin. The best way to soak your feet is
in a bucket of warm water. But, if you find that you are
pressed for time, just put a cap over the shower drain, so
your feet can soak in the water as you shower.

3. Exfoliate. Then, gently exfoliate the feet using a sugar
scrub or a loofah sponge. Use a pumice stone only if it
doesn't irritate your feet. Take your time to avoid undue
irritation. Rinse with warm water.

4. Olive Oil.  After drying your feet with a soft towel, oil
them with olive oil. It's better if the olive oil is warmed up a
little first. Do this once a week.

5. Castor Oil. A secret shared by podiatrists and pedicurists
the world over. Castor oil is a heavy oil which is absorbed
deeply by the feet. Like olive oil, it is also very healing to
the skin.

6. Daily Moisturize. You must moisturize your feet every
single day. You must use a deep, rich, heavy oil such as
vaseline, Gold Bond foot cream, olive oil, castor oil or
coconut oil. If your skin is sensitive, use baby oil. But
whatever you use, you must moisturize. Most people would
not dream of leaving the house without brushing their teeth.
But when it comes to our feet, many of us simply neglect
them. Give them a daily moisturizing. As the old saying goes
-- take care of your feet and they will take care of you.

7. Eat Differently.  You also have to eat differently. Drink 8
glasses of water every single day, no exceptions. Take fish
oil pills if you can't eat fish 6 times a week. Also, use olive
oil as a dressing and in your cooking. You need sufficient oil
and water in your system to have smooth feet.
