There's a lot of concern and controversy about soy.  Depending on
who you talk to, soy  is either the best ting since sliced bread or it's
a part of a world conspiracy to destroy your health. Enough. What's
the truth about soy?

Soy comes from soy beans. Soy beans have been grown for
thousands of years, first in China. The Chines grow black soy
beans. Now many countries around the world produce soy.  Brazil,
Argentina and China are top producers of soy beans for the world
market.

Soy is valued because it is a high source of protein but it has no fat.
Soy is about 38% pure protein.

So, it's a natural cheap alternative to meat protein. And it has
almost none of the saturated fat that meat contains which has been
linked to heart disease, obesity and stroke. It does contain
unsaturated fat-- about 18%--fiber (15%) and carbohydrates
(13%).

You can find soy in many products n your grocery store, including
tofu, soy milk, tempeh, many soy snacks, soy cheese, soy ice cream
or frozen yogurt and of course soy beans themselves. Soy also
contains calcium (about 88 mg in a cup of soy beans).   Soy milk
has become a widely used alternative to cow's milk for those people
who are allergic to dairy products.

Now for the flip side. Why has soy become controversial.

Soy contains a natural form of estrogen called phytoestrogen.
Soybeans contain a particular phytoestrogen called isoflavones.

Research has shown that soy can affect the sperm count in men.

But no research has shown that soy adversely affects the fertility of
women.

Soy does help in reducing hot flashes and bone loss in older, post
menopausal women. Perhaps the most recently well known
compounds found in soy are the phytoestrogens.

These compounds are hormones but they do not seem to harm your
period.
