Home Remedies for the Common Cold
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus.
There is no complete cure. But there are natural home
remedies which can alleviate the symptoms.

1. Fish Oil.  The herpes virus acts along the nerves.
That is why you can "feel a cold sore coming on".  Fish
oil for certain species such as salmon and sardines
contains
omega-3, an essential fatty acid. These oils act
to support the nervous system of the body. In fact, some
studies have shown that consumption of fish oil
actually alleviates nervous conditions and depression.

Eat oily fish such as salmon, sardines or tuna at least 3
times a week.

2. Witch Hazel. Dab it directly on the outbreak. It will
help to heal the skin more quickly. Dab it on at night
and in the morning.

3. Dark, Green Vegetables. Spinach, kale, turnip greens
and all dark, leafy greens have folate and other
micro-nutrients which helps to keep your nervous
system balanced.

4. Dark Bread and Whole Grains. Whole grains
(oatmeal, wheat bread, rye bread, barley) contain
B-vitamins which support the nervous system. They
may also help your nerves by
keeping your blood sugar
steady and thereby reducing sugar spikes which make
you jittery.

5. Reduce Stress. Stress seems to activate the cold sore
heroes virus. If you get cold sores around your period,
make sure you do at least 1 hour of cardiovascular
exercise each day to reduce stress. Also, do some yoga
stretching and take a bubble bath. Use these basics to
develop a pre-period routine that will help to reduce
the chances that you'll experience an outbreak.

6. Body Cleanse. Do a
natural body cleanse if you feel
yourself getting stresses or you feel a cold sore coming
on.

7. Sleep.  A good night's sleep helps your body to build
defenses to stress. Make sure you are getting at least 8
continuous hours of sleep, and that you are not snoring.
Do everything you can to
stop snoring because it is has
been connected to creating
dark eye circles, heart
disease and stroke.

8. Once an outbreak occurs, use medicated ointments
such as Abreva to shorten healing time. And never,
ever transfer the virus from your mouth to other areas
of your body (especially your eyes or genitals).
