Hair is genetically designed to grow. Hair even grows after you are dead. Truth. Even after you die, your hair and nails continue to grow. So, if hair is genetically designed to grow, why do so many of us have trouble growing it long while we are alive? The answer is what we do to our hair. The more hair is manipulated, the more likely it is to break. As a result, your hair stays short. So, the trick with hair growth is to make sure you are not doing anything to break it off. That means, eating foods that encourage healthy hair. And that means, avoiding manipulating the hair. By manipulating, we mean unnecessary pulling, tugging and teasing of the hair shaft. Here are some tips: 1. Braiding. Try braiding. Wash your hair every week and use oil to keep it from getting dry. If you don't like the braided style, try getting a weave in which they do braids (not glue) as a foundation. The less you manipulate your hair, the more it grows. That's why braiding works. It gives your hair a rest. 2. Conditioner before and after you shampoo. Most people only condition their hair when they shampoo. This is especially true for those of us with flaxen (European) hair as opposed to super-curly or coarse (African) hair. Both types of hair need conditioning. For flaxen hair that is dry, try using an olive oil or avocado treatment once a week. For African hair, try using hot olive oil treatments when you wash it once a week. Also, use an oil based conditioner twice a week on the hair and the scalp (Bergamont, Afrosheen, Royal Crown, any of the other major brands). 3. Treat your hair very gently when it is wet. Do not simply pull at tangled hair. Be patient and de-tangle it without simply destroying the strands. 4. Hold your head down over the edge of the couch or your bed to let the blood rush to your scalp once a day. 5. Eat to nourish your hair and scalp by including plenty of green vegetables, fish, nuts and water in your diet. 6 Take care of your scalp. Take care of your scalp and your hair will grow. Gently massage your scalp at least once a day. Keep it lubricated to avoid dry cracks. You add moisture to your scalp when you wash it and condition it once a week with olive oil (or if your hair and scalp are naturally oily, then once every two weeks.)
